Welcome to my Website

Hello everyone. My name is Roscoe Savage. I’m ten years old and I’ve just completed the Coast to Coast walk from St Bees in Cumbria to Robin Hoods Bay in North Yorkshire – over 190 miles.

I started the walk on Tuesday 7th April 2009 and completing it 11 days later on Saturday 18th April 2009.

Let me tell you something about me. I live in Nidderdale in North Yorkshire. I have three older brothers : William 17, Charlie 15, Patrick 13 and one younger brother: Albert 6. My dads name is Ian and my mums name is Ruth. Mum is a journalist and if you want to you can read about things that happen in our family:

I’m in Year 5 at school. My best friends (boys) are Lewis, James, Matthew and Sam ; my best friends (girls) are Alisia, Sophie R and Sophie S. My teachers are Mr Ellis and Mrs Bush (but she’s having a baby soon so not sure what’s then going to happen).

Before I even started the Coast to Coast walk I knew a lot about it. Obviously it’s a long way; I was away from home staying in bed & breakfast accommodation for 12 days. It takes you through the Lake District , the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors ; so it goes through some pretty nice areas. Sometimes you have to climb up and then go down big hills so it can be hard and slow going. If the weather is bad it can be even harder and slower.

My older brothers told me all this. They have all done the walk: William when he was 14, Charlie when he was 14 and Patrick when he was 11. There are two reasons I wanted to do the Coast to Coast. Firstly because my brothers all said it was great fun; and secondly because if I finished it I’d be the youngest person in my family to do it.

Did I tell you that I did the walk with dad? He showed me the way. He’s done the walk twice (with my brothers) and also done the route on a mountain bike. He said he could probably do it with his eyes closed without a map. Mum said she hoped so because he’s always getting us all lost when he has to use a map; and he never asks for help with directions.

This is how we did the walk:

Day 1 : St Bees – Ennerdale Bridge
Day 2 : Ennerdale Bridge – Stonethwaite
Day 3 : Stonethwaite – Patterdale
Day 4 : Patterdale – Bampton
Day 5 : Bampton – Orton
Day 6 : Orton – Kirkby Stephan
Day 7 : Kirkby Stephan – Reeth
Day 8 : Reeth – Bolton-on Swale
Day 9 : Bolton-on-Swale – Osmotherly
Day 10 : Osmotherly – Blakey Ridge
Day 11 : Blakey Ridge – Grosmont
Day 12 : Grosmont – RHB

Dad said the weather was going to be a big factor in how difficult it became. He was right. At some point during the walk we had sun, rain, calm, wind and everything in between.

On the following pages you can see some pictures that my dad took. He then shares his words of wisdom (he says) about taking children on a long walk like the Coast to Coast.

Thanks for reading.
